In his memoir of 1900, Henri Poincaré proposed a program to study the arithmetic properties of algebraic curves based on their geometric structures. This led to tremendous achievements in the 20th century, including the proof of the Mordell—Weil theorem (Mordell 1922, Weil 1928), the Mordell conjecture (Faltings 1983), and Fermat's last theorem (Wiles 1994).

In this series of lectures, I will describe the early history, recent developments, and open problems on the arithmetic of curves and related varieties.

主讲人简介 / About the Speaker

张寿武，美国艺术与科学院院士，美国数学学会会士，普林斯顿大学数学系教授。研究领域为数论与代数几何，主要研究成果包括：Bogomolov猜想的证明，椭圆曲线上的Gross-Zagier公式在全实域上GL(2)型阿贝尔簇上的推广，平均Colmez猜想的证明等。

张寿武1983年毕业于中山大学数学系，1986年硕士毕业于中国科学院数学研究所，师从数学家王元。后赴美国哥伦比亚大学留学，师从Lucien Szpiro教授，1991年获博士学位。曾就职于普林斯顿高等研究院、普林斯顿大学和哥伦比亚大学。先后获斯隆研究奖（1997年）、晨兴数学奖金奖（1998年）、古根海姆基金奖（2009年）等奖项。他培养了一大批优秀年轻数学家，包括张伟、袁新意、田野、刘一峰等。
